Returning to college after decades away can feel intimidating, especially when math is involved. During ALEKS Module 5, we learned that Venn diagrams are much more than overlapping circles—they are powerful tools for organizing information and solving real-world problems.
As a mother-and-daughter team building Dee & Dee Brown LLC while attending college, we discovered that every concept became easier once we connected it to our business and daily lives.
What We Learned
Module 5 focused on several key concepts:

At first glance, the problems looked overwhelming. After practicing several examples, we realized every problem followed a predictable pattern.
The Four-Step Rule That Changed Everything
For every two-circle Venn diagram, we followed the same process.
Step 1
Find the overlap.
Step 2
Subtract the overlap from the first set.
Step 3
Subtract the overlap from the second set.
Step 4
Subtract everything inside the circles from the total to find the outside region.
This simple system worked repeatedly.
Our Reverse Engineering Method
Instead of memorizing formulas, we learned to work backward.
Whenever we saw a problem, we asked:
What information is already given?
What belongs in the middle?
What belongs only on the left?
What belongs only on the right?
What belongs outside the circles?
Breaking the problem into smaller pieces reduced mistakes and built confidence.
Real Dee & Dee Brown Example
Imagine our resale business.
Set A represents items listed on Poshmark.
Set B represents items shared on social media.
The intersection represents listings that are both posted and promoted.
The complement represents everything that is not in that category.
Suddenly, Venn diagrams become business tools instead of abstract math problems.
The Biggest Lesson We Learned
The hardest part of math wasn't the arithmetic.
It was learning to organize information.
Once we understood where every number belonged, the calculations became straightforward.
Organization creates understanding.
Why Adult Students Shouldn't Fear Math
Many returning students believe they are "bad at math."
