At 64, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up.

After military service, nearly 30 years in the workforce, and raising a family, I was answering that question again. This time, my future included building Dee & Dee Brown LLC with my daughter, Dominique.

For my COM 101 Fundamentals of Speaking course at Washtenaw Community College, I was assigned a self-introduction speech about my future career. I expected to introduce myself, explain my goals, and complete the assignment.

Instead, it made me pause. What did I want this next chapter of my life to look like? What could I build from everything I had already learned?

My answer became a story about service, returning to school, entrepreneurship, and the legacy Dominique and I are creating together.

A Career Built on Service

I proudly served in the United States Air Force before spending nearly 30 years working for Ann Arbor Public Schools. Those experiences taught me discipline, responsibility, organization, and the importance of showing up for others.

For much of my life, I focused on doing my job well, supporting my family, and preparing for the future. Health challenges and life transitions eventually required me to rethink that future.

I could not control every setback. I could decide what to do next. Returning to college became part of that decision.

Returning to College Gave My Experience a New Purpose

When I returned to Washtenaw Community College, I expected to work toward a degree. I also began finding ways to connect what I was learning to a business we could build.

Business classes helped me think about planning and organization. Marketing helped me understand branding. Website work gave us a place to share our story. Public speaking helped me explain why that story matters.

Assignments started becoming useful beyond the classroom. A writing project could help us communicate clearly. A business lesson could improve a workflow. A presentation could help us introduce Dee & Dee Brown LLC to someone new.

Building Dee & Dee Brown LLC Together

Dee & Dee Brown LLC is our veteran-owned, mother–daughter resale business. It is also where we put our education into practice and document what we learn along the way.

Our work connects three areas:

Reselling: Creating listings, organizing items, and learning from the everyday work of running an online resale business.
Business systems: Developing routines and processes that help us work with greater consistency.
Education: Turning classroom lessons into practical decisions and sharing those connections through our blog.

We are still learning and building. That is part of the story we want readers to see: the effort behind the progress, the decisions we make, and the lessons we carry forward.

What Legacy Means to Us

Building with Dominique gives this journey a purpose beyond my own next chapter. We are developing knowledge, experience, and a business together.

For us, legacy includes how we solve problems, how we respond to setbacks, and what we teach each other. It includes the habits and values that can continue beyond a single class, sale, or milestone.

We want our work to reflect the same principles that have guided us through life: service, accountability, education, resilience, and consistent effort.

Why It Matters

If you are returning to school, changing careers, or starting over after a setback, it can be difficult to imagine what comes next. I know that feeling.

Our experience offers one practical place to begin: connect a lesson you are learning to something you need to do. Improve one process. Write one clearer message. Organize one part of your work. Give that knowledge a purpose.

A new chapter takes time and effort. Education and entrepreneurship have given us ways to move forward, one decision at a time.

The Assignment Became a Direction

My COM 101 speech began with a question about my future career. It helped me recognize that my experience as a veteran, employee, mother, and student could contribute to something we were building together.

I am still a student. I am also an entrepreneur and co-founder. Those roles help me keep learning and give me opportunities to apply what I learn.

After nearly 30 years in the workforce, I am building a new chapter with Dominique—and documenting the work as we go.
