How Connecting Our Custom Domain Taught Me Real Entrepreneurship Skills

When many people think about entrepreneurship, they picture product ideas, marketing campaigns, or making sales. While those things are important, one of the biggest lessons I have learned as an entrepreneurship student is that building a business often requires learning technical skills that happen behind the scenes.

This week, I took another major step in building Dee & Dee Brown LLC by connecting our custom domain, DeeAndDeeBrown.com, to our business blog. Although it sounds simple, the process taught me valuable lessons about persistence, problem-solving, and the importance of owning your business presence online.

Why a Custom Domain Matters

A custom domain is a website address that belongs to your business rather than a free platform. Instead of using a long address provided by a website service, a custom domain allows customers to find your business through a professional web address.

For Dee & Dee Brown LLC, owning DeeAndDeeBrown.com is an important part of our branding strategy. It creates a more professional appearance, builds trust with visitors, and allows us to continue growing our online presence as entrepreneurs.

As a veteran-owned business, we want our website to reflect the same professionalism and commitment that we bring to our customers, our education, and our business operations.

Learning Through Failure

One reason this accomplishment feels significant is because it represents a challenge that I struggled with before. Last year, while taking this same Entrepreneurship course, I attempted to build a website using Webstarts. At the time, I was still learning about website design, domains, hosting, and online business systems. I spent hours trying to make things work and often felt frustrated by technical issues that seemed impossible to solve.

The experience became one of the most difficult parts of the course. Looking back, I realize that many entrepreneurs face similar situations. Not every business decision works the first time. Not every system functions the way we expect. Success often comes from learning, adjusting, and continuing forward rather than giving up.

Instead of allowing that experience to stop me, I continued learning and eventually moved our website to Blogger, where I felt more comfortable building and managing content.

Understanding DNS and Website Connections

One of the most valuable lessons from this experience was learning how domains connect to websites. Many people visit websites every day without realizing the technical systems operating behind them. When someone types a website address into a browser, a network of DNS records helps direct visitors to the correct location.

To connect our custom domain to Blogger, I had to learn how to:

  • Access Namecheap account settings
  • Update nameservers
  • Remove old website configurations
  • Configure DNS records
  • Create A Records and CNAME Records
  • Verify ownership with Google
  • Enable domain redirects
  • Wait for internet-wide DNS propagation

At first, these terms felt overwhelming. However, by working through the process step by step, I gained a much better understanding of how websites function behind the scenes. This experience reminded me that entrepreneurship often requires learning skills that are completely outside of our comfort zone.

The Importance of Business Ownership

One lesson that stood out to me throughout this process is the importance of ownership. When entrepreneurs own their domain name, they gain greater control over their business identity.

Social media platforms can change. Marketplace rules can change. Technology platforms can come and go. However, owning your domain gives your business a permanent home on the internet.

For Dee & Dee Brown LLC, this means having a place where we can share:
  • Reseller tips and strategies
  • Business lessons
  • College experiences
  • Veteran-owned business updates
  • Entrepreneurship insights
  • Future products and resources

Building a website is not simply about creating pages. It is about creating an asset that supports long-term business growth.

Entrepreneurship Is Problem Solving

One thing I have learned repeatedly through college and business ownership is that entrepreneurship is really about problem-solving. Every challenge presents a decision. We can either stop when things become difficult, or we can continue learning until we find a solution.

Connecting our custom domain required patience. There were moments when settings did not work correctly, error messages appeared, and progress seemed slow. Yet each problem solved increased my confidence and expanded my understanding of how online businesses operate. The process reinforced an important lesson: successful entrepreneurs are not people who avoid problems. They are people who learn how to solve them.

Looking Ahead

As Dominique and I continue building Dee & Dee Brown LLC, every new skill strengthens our business foundation. We are not only learning entrepreneurship through textbooks and lectures. We are applying these concepts in real time through our business, our website, our social media platforms, and our daily operations.

Connecting our custom domain may seem like a small milestone, but it represents something much larger. It reflects growth, persistence, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when challenges arise. Connecting our custom domain also opens the door for future upgrades, including professional business email addresses and additional website features that will help support the continued growth of Dee & Dee Brown LLC.

The experience reminds me how far we have come. What once felt impossible now feels achievable because we continued learning one step at a time. Entrepreneurship is not about being perfect. It is about building, learning, adapting, and continuing to grow.
