From a Feeding Tube to Academic Honors: How Washtenaw Community College Helped Change My Life

A Journey I Never Thought I Would Take

Every morning, I wake up with gratitude. There was a time when I believed my opportunity for higher education had passed. Years of illness, caregiving responsibilities, and personal loss made college feel impossible. Instead of planning for the future, I was focused on surviving each day.

Today, I am a student at Washtenaw Community College, a proud Air Force veteran, a co-founder of Dee & Dee Brown LLC, and an Honors student studying alongside my daughter. That transformation did not happen overnight. It began with one simple question.

The Question That Changed Everything

In the middle of one of the most difficult periods of my life, I asked my daughter, Dominique: "Would you like to take a class at Washtenaw Community College with me?" She said yes.

At the time, both of us were dealing with health challenges. We needed something to focus on besides doctor appointments, medical tests, and uncertainty. Neither of us knew that one class would become a life-changing journey.

A Lifetime of Caring for Others

For most of my adult life, my focus was caring for my family. I was married to my husband, Fred, for 26 years.  He suffered from kidney disease and eventually became disabled.

For more than a decade, I became his full-time caregiver while raising our daughter. When you spend years caring for others, it becomes second nature. My husband's needs came first. My daughter's needs came first. I never imagined there would come a day when I would need that same level of care.

When My Health Reached Its Lowest Point

Several years ago, my health began to decline dramatically. I faced serious medical complications that included blood clots, malnutrition, hospitalization, rehabilitation, chronic pain, mobility challenges, and multiple autoimmune conditions.

My health deteriorated to the point where I required a feeding tube and was sent to a nursing home for rehabilitation. Looking back, it was one of the darkest periods of my life. There were moments when I questioned whether I would ever recover.

Through it all, Dominique remained by my side. Just as I had cared for her throughout her life, she became my caregiver. She visited daily. She advocated for me. She encouraged me when I struggled to find hope. Together, we kept moving forward.

How Washtenaw Community College Gave Me Hope Again

When we enrolled at Washtenaw Community College, we were not just signing up for classes. We were reclaiming our future. WCC gave us something that illness had taken away: purpose. Each course challenged us to learn, think, grow, and imagine new possibilities.

Instead of focusing entirely on our medical challenges, we focused on assignments, goals, projects, and academic success. Slowly, our confidence began to return. What started as one class turned into an educational journey neither of us expected.

Building a Future Together

Today, Dominique and I attend college together while building Dee & Dee Brown LLC, our veteran-owned business. We have earned academic honors, joined honor societies, participated in student organizations, and continued working toward our goals despite ongoing health challenges.

Education gave us more than knowledge. It gave us confidence. It gave us direction. It reminded us that growth is possible at any stage of life.

Why President Bellanca's Leadership Matters

One of the things that stands out most about Washtenaw Community College is its commitment to students. Under the leadership of President Rose Bellanca, students are made to feel seen, valued, and supported. That matters.

As veteran students and co-founders of Dee & Dee Brown LLC, this moment reflects their journey of resilience, education, and renewed purpose through higher education.

For adult learners, veterans, caregivers, and students overcoming personal challenges, feeling like you belong can make all the difference. WCC has become much more than a college to me. It has become a place of healing, opportunity, and hope.

It's Never Too Late

If there is one lesson my journey has taught me, it is this: it is never too late to start over. It is never too late to learn something new. It is never too late to pursue your dreams. A few years ago, I was fighting for my life. Today, I am building a future. And for that, I will always be grateful.
