How Going Back to College Helped Us Rebuild Our Business and Life | Entrepreneurship, Small Business, Education & Personal Growth
A Mother and Daughter's Journey Through College, Entrepreneurship, and Rebuilding
There are moments in life that may seem ordinary to everyone else but feel life-changing to the people experiencing them.
Sitting together at the Washtenaw Community College Honors Convocation was one of those moments for us.
To some, it may have looked like a mother and daughter attending a ceremony. To us, it represented perseverance, entrepreneurship, education, and the decision to rebuild our lives and business after facing significant challenges.
As co-founders of Dee & Dee Brown LLC, a veteran-owned small business, our journey back to college became one of the most important decisions we have ever made.

Going Back to College as Adult Learners

Over the years, we faced:

How College Improved Our Entrepreneurial Skills
Many people assume entrepreneurship is simply about making money.
Our college experience taught us something much different.
Successful businesses are built through:
Courses in supply chain management, social media storytelling, branding, website development, and entrepreneurship gave us practical tools that we could immediately implement into our business.
Instead of viewing assignments as homework, we started treating them as opportunities to strengthen our company.
That shift changed our perspective completely.

The Humility Of Starting Over
One lesson we rarely hear discussed is how difficult it can be to start over later in life.
Returning to college requires humility.
Learning new technology requires patience.
Building a business while attending school requires discipline.
There is vulnerability in admitting that previous systems are no longer working and that new skills must be learned.
However, rebuilding also creates an opportunity to be intentional.
Instead of operating in survival mode, we learned how to create systems, establish goals, and build a stronger foundation for long-term success.
Those lessons continue to shape the future of Dee & Dee Brown LLC today.

The Reality of Building a Business While in College
Social media often highlights overnight success stories.
The reality of entrepreneurship looks very different.
For us, entrepreneurship has looked like:
Our experience has taught us that progress matters more than speed.
You are not behind.
You are building.
The reality of entrepreneurship looks very different.
For us, entrepreneurship has looked like:
- Studying late at night
- Completing assignments between business tasks
- Learning website design from scratch
- Creating content while managing responsibilities
- Working through health challenges
- Developing business systems one step at a time
Our experience has taught us that progress matters more than speed.

Why The Honors Convocation Meant So Much
The Honors Convocation represented more than academic achievement.
It represented growth.
Not perfection.
Not completion.
Progress.
As a mother and daughter studying Business Management and Entrepreneurship together, this moment reminded us that education has the power to create new opportunities at any age.
It also reinforced a lesson we now strongly believe:
When education and entrepreneurship work together, incredible things can happen.
Applying what we learn in real time allows us to grow both academically and professionally.
The Biggest Lesson We Learned
Going back to college taught us much more than business concepts.
It taught us:
Some of the most meaningful success stories are the ones that nearly never happened.
It taught us:
- How to rebuild with intention
- How to create systems that support growth
- How to think critically and solve problems
- How to adapt when circumstances change
- How to keep moving forward during difficult seasons
Some of the most meaningful success stories are the ones that nearly never happened.
